Material Palette Exhibition

Research on materials presented by Bachelor students in Design

April 5th – April 21st, 2017, Learning Centre Lobby, Otaniemi

The exhibition showcases research projects from Material Research course, which is part of the second year Bachelor studies in the Department of Design. During the course, students learn the empirical research method and deepen their understanding of e.g.
properties, fabrication methods and aesthetics of different materials through their own research projects. During the course each student designed, implemented and reported an empirical research project on a particular material or a fabrication method according to his or her own interest. Students also practiced writing a research paper – the
research reports are compiled in Aaltodoc-database.

Most research projects begun from a wish to find a solution to a
specific design problem or from a wish to find a new creative tool to
use in artistic or design work. After the preliminary researches the
students have a better starting point for design work, when the nature,
the behavior and characteristics of the material in use and the
requirements of the machining methods are understood more deeply.

Assessing the results of the empirical tests visual and sensory
observation was often crucial. The greatness of the empirical research
projects was that although the results were sometimes contrary to the
hypothesis they were aesthetically and functionally more attractive than
those of the original assumption.
