Artworks by Jaakko Leeve: Challenging the Overproduction

  • Beta Space 1 Otakaari Espoo, 02150 Finland (map)

On September 16-30, 2016 beta SPACE hosted two artworks by ViCCA Master student Jaakko Leeve: an installation Creative Destruction and a ryjiy graffiti. Conceptual installation has been created specifically for the exhibition, and the process was documented with photos that are part of the installation.

The artist worked with famous Savoy vases, designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto in 1936, melting them down in order to give vases a unique shape, impossible to replicate. «The idea of my work is to question the overproduction of art», - Leeve says. «The Aalto vase has deservedly become a success, but in my opinion, Finnish design market is leaning too much on the past and does not provide room for new talents». The outcomes are exhibited in the interiors, created by professor Alvar Aalto for the Department of Architecture in 1965.

The other artwork on display is an example of social art, created by the artist in collaboration with Kisälli workshop in Vihti, employing professional craftspeople with disabilities. The name of the artwork is RUG and it is a graffiti, woven into a colorful ryijy.
